One of the great gifts of Steve’s life was sharing his intimate knowledge of Yosemite, which he literally knew from top to bottom. In "Ahwahnee — The Deep Grassy Valley," he guides us through the verdant valley floor. In "Dance of Cloud and Cliff," he lifts us up to majestic Half Dome, bathed in setting sunlight. With his classic, monumental landscape "Storm Over Tenaya Canyon," we soar higher still. Steve often included wildlife in his pieces and sometimes suggested a narrative, but this pure landscape and the others shown here are deliberate departures . . . almost certainly inspired by the dramatic images of Albert Bierstadt and other 19th-century painters of the west.
